Welcome to Young Pakistani Thinkers Portal
introduction

This web-portal has been created as a result of the decision taken by the participants of the national meeting entitled "Challenges for Socio-economic Development in Pakistan:  Role of Science and Technology", which was held in Islamabad from 26 to 28 October 2009. The purpose of the meeting was to highlight the views of young Pakistani thinkers, researchers and scholars on the of challenges Pakistan was facing in the areas of education, health, agriculture, economy, ICTs and environment and their science-led solutions.

The main features of the meeting were: (a) it was Pakistan-specific (b) it was youth-oriented and (c) it was meant to obtain candid and innovative ideas of the young participants on individual basis and completely independent from the policies of the organizations of their affiliation. The young participants, 25 in number, were selected from all over the country’s academic and R&D organizations, purely on the basis of merit. The discussions were held in six technical sessions spread over three days and helped by 12 renowned resource persons. The outcome of the meeting was so encouraging, both in terms of substance and quality that the participants unanimously desired that the discussions should continue and the work done in the meeting should be expanded. The most effective way to do this was to create a think tank and a web-portal to establish an effective networking among the members of the think tank. This effort will enable the think tank to produce further useful ideas for the benefit of the Pakistani society. The intellectual output from the think-tank would also serve useful purpose for the country’s policy-makers and planners, as well as to provide a case study to be considered and replicated in other developing countries.

On the basis of the suggestions made by the young participants of the October 2009 meeting, the think tank has been named “Young Pakistani Thinkers”. The web-portal will provide an effective means of interconnectivity among the members of the think tank. It is hoped that the think tank and web-portal will play an important role for the welfare of the country.
